Surf’s Up

What’s an Ipswich Photographer doing on the beach???

Taking in the sun and surfing action of course!  I couldn’t resist capturing the action going on in the surf at Polzeath Beach in North Cornwall….one of the best surfing beaches in the country and one of the most beautiful beaches in the country…in my humble opinion!!

I took this shot of Austin waist deep in swirling surf while on holiday using a basic Canon 450D cropped sensor body with an 18 -200mm EFS lens during a surf school session. When I’m messing around on holiday on the beach I don’t usually take my professional equipment with me… Sand and salt water don’t mix too well with expensive gear, so I didn’t dare take the professional full frame Canon 5DmarkIII or “L” series lenses into the water in case I got knocked over by a wave or dropped them in the surf…..now that would take some explaining to the Wife !

Shooting in the surf is great fun for an Ipswich Photographer, as we don’t get much surf on the East Coast, but keeping the camera dry as well as catching the action clearly with a long zoom lens is the tricky part.   As I was snapping holiday pics, this shot was taken in large format JPEG rather than RAW. If you fancy learning to surf, head on down to Polzeath where there are numerous surf schools at the back of the beach running classes all through the day.  You can also try your hand at Coasteering… Austin and I did and it was a crazy, crazy experience, but more of that another time.

For those that are interested this shot was taken with a basic Canon 450D set at 1/640 sec @ f7.1  ISO 100 and an  EFS 18-200mm zoom lens at a focal length of 200mm. Showing you can take great photos with inexpensive gear!
