As part of the Great East Run pre-event promotions I was invited to photograph the children from Cliff Lane Primary school running their Daily Mile with Andy Vernon.
The Daily Mile is a national scheme aimed at getting young primary school children to take exercise outside in the fresh air on a daily basis. It’s a social activity where children run or jog for 15 minutes a day every school day with their classmates in the school playground or on the school sports field.
Children and staff joined in with Andy running circuits around the playground, after which Andy gave a short inspirational talk to the youngsters about the benefits of keeping fit and of running in particular.
So far the scheme has over 2.3 million primary school children running a mile a day. The children run in their school uniforms, so there is no special kit or expensive equipment required or time out for changing clothes. There is no set up or tidy up time and it only takes 15 minutes a day. It helps keep young children fit and helps tackle obesity and inclusion issues with every child no matter what their circumstances, age or abilities being able to join in.
