Sir Roger Gifford presented with portrait by Cordwainers
To commemorate his year of office as Lord Mayor of London 2012-13, the Worshipful Company of Cordwainers commissioned a portrait of Honorary Liveryman Sir Roger Gifford (Left) by the noted artist Andre de Moller (Right.)
The portrait of Sir Roger Gifford was unveiled at the Clothworkers’ Hall during a recent livery company dinner held by the Worshipful Company of Cordwainers. The portrait will remain on display in the Company office.
Sir Roger is depicted in front of one of his favourites works of art, “Portrait of a Man in his Study’ by Gerard ter Borch, which shows both a recorder – an instrument that Sir Roger plays keenly- and a map of the world, implying the man, like Sir Roger, is well travelled.
The portrait of Sir Roger Gifford also includes evocative symbols. The recorder on the table lies beside a shoe box, a reference to the Cordwainers of which Sir Roger is a proud member. In addition to this are the Mayoral badge and his Father’s watch, which he has worn constantly for over 40 years.
Sir Roger and Andre de Moller were also accompanied by Lady Gifford at the presentation of the portrait
