The Great East Swim 2017 was launched at Wattisham Airfield by swimming legend Keri-anne Payne, the two-time open water world champion and Olympic silver medallist.
The Great East Swim 2017 returns for the ninth year to Alton Water Reservoir on June 17th 2017. What a pleasure it was to photograph Keri-anne Payne, the former Team GB swimmer, who retired from the sport last month as she was joined by representatives from Macmillan Cancer Support, the official charity of the Great Swim Series and two local charities, The Blossom Charity and Inspire Suffolk.
Keri-anne also met military personnel from the Wattisham Flying Station who will be taking part in the Great East Swim 2017. Some of Wattisham Flying Station’s triathletes later received a master class from the elite swimmer at the airfield’s indoor swimming pool.
Wattishan Airfield is home to the 3rd and 4th Regiment of the Army Air Corps and their Apache attack helicopters and it’s hoped that the visit will encourage more of the airfield’s armed forces, many of who are triathletes, to take on the challenge of an open water swim in Suffolk as part of their community engagement programme.
