In a major coup for running in Suffolk, Team GB Olympian and middle distance runner Andy Vernon launches the Great East Run in Ipswich.
2017 will see the inaugural staging of the Great East Run in Ipswich, which will bring a major new half marathon to the Suffolk region on Sunday 24th September.
This PR shoot of the official launch event saw me photographing Team GB Olympian Andy Vernon at Endeavour House, the home of Suffolk County Council in Ipswich. Andy was headlining the launch event for the Great East Run which is being organised by a partnership of Suffolk County Council, Ipswich Borough Council, Ipswich Jaffa Running Club and the Great Run Company.
This new half marathon event will be part of the UK wide Great Run Series that includes the Great North Run in Newcastle and The Great South Run in Portsmouth. Alex Jackson, project manager at the Great East Run hopes the event will grow to attract 6,000 runners by 2020.
The event, to be run over a fast and flat 13.1 mile route will pass under the iconic Orwell Bridge twice and will see around 2,500 runners in its inaugural year. The event organisers are thinking big, they hope that one day the Great East Run will rival the Great North Run which attracts approximately 57,000 runners.
So whether you’re new to running, looking for a challenge, or aiming for a record PB, this could be the event for you. What are you waiting for? Sign up today and be part of something great!
The event benefits from having a great location. There’s nothing like being in the heart of the town and Ipswich has a wide variety of places to eat and drink, historical architecture to marvel at and a wide range of activities for all the family to enjoy.
